Athletics at Virginia Academy

At Virginia Academy, we see athletics as a means to provide our students with an opportunity to gain much needed physical exercise, but also to learn valuable life lessons through teamwork, competition, and hard work. We believe that genius can be expressed through athletics as well as academics, and sports provide many students an opportunity to use and display special God-given talents and abilities as well as opportunities to secure financial means for future educational pursuits. Athletics also help to build school spirit and opportunities for social interaction. For all these reasons, we encourage participation in a variety of intramural and interscholastic sports – elementary through upper school. Our upper school athletics program is led by former Steeler and Redskin great, Antwaan Randle El.

After turning down an opportunity to play pro baseball for the Chicago Cubs right out of high school, Mr. Randle El became a three-sport student-athlete (basketball, football, and baseball) receiving his undergraduate degree at the University of Indiana. By the end of a nine-year career in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Redskins, he was named an all-pro three times and won one of two Super Bowls while with the Steelers, throwing the only touchdown (of 43 yards!) by a receiver in Super Bowl history. Now an MBA graduate of George Washington University, husband, and father of six children who all attend Virginia Academy, he has been busy helping us prepare students for their best life. In his six years with us, there have been numerous championship teams including one state championship in boy’s basketball, several college scholarships, and many lives impacted by his faith in Christ, love for youth, and commitment to excellence.
