The Best First Day of School: Tips for a New Student

The first day of school can be an exciting, yet stressful time for students. Meeting friends and teachers and the excitement of a new school year are among the best parts of the first day of school, but the worry of a whole new schedule and classes can also make the first day of school feel daunting. However you feel about the first day of school, here are some tips to help you have the best first day ever!

1. Arrive Early on the First Day of School

Whether it is your first day at a new school or a school you have been to for years, it is always helpful to arrive slightly early to familiarize yourself with all the places you will be going on your first day. Find your classroom and desk for elementary students, and locate your locker and homeroom for middle and high school students. It may even be helpful to walk through your schedule in your extra time to ensure you know where to go! Arriving early will give you peace of mind and confidence as you embark on your best first day of school.

2. Introduce Yourself to Classmates and Teachers

Feeling more comfortable on the first day of school often starts with getting to know those around you. Introducing yourself to your teacher helps them to get to know you, and it also makes a good first impression! Additionally, many students are also feeling nervous on the first day and looking for someone to talk to, so introduce yourself and get to know those in class with you. And who knows, maybe you’ll make a new friend!

3. Set Goals for the New Year

While starting a new school year can feel scary, it is also exciting! It is an opportunity for personal growth in many different areas. Setting reachable goals can encourage learning and give you something to work toward. Goals can be anything from meeting new friends to getting an A in math class to joining a new extracurricular. 4. Pray Before Your First Day

With the spiral of emotions that come with the first day of school, it is essential to start your day and year with prayer. Pray for peace and guidance as your year begins, and trust that God has His hand on each step you take. Here are few Bible verses to reflect on for your first day:

Philippians 4:6-7 ESV – “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do and he will show you which path to take.”
