Culture of Winning: 4th Consecutive GBB State Championship Win

ASHBURN, VA – The Virginia Academy girls varsity basketball team fought to earn a 58-53 victory over the Steward School Spartans to win the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) Division II championship. Following this win, three of the Virginia Academy players made VISAA All-State teams and Head Coach Walter Hamilton was selected as the VISAA Coach of the Year.

This is the team’s fourth consecutive state championship win, and their second win since moving up to Division II last year. The season concluded 15-9 overall.

Three members of the girls varsity team were selected for Division II All-State Teams. Senior Elyse Autrey and junior Leah Keyes earned First Team All-State honors, and senior Sajol Thornhill earned Second Team All-State honors.

Head Coach Walter Hamilton was once again named the VISAA Coach of the Year. He has now received this honor for both years his team has played in Division II, and had previously won it while the team played in Division III.

When asked how the Virginia Academy team is able to maintain their standard of excellence on the court, Hamilton explains, “We have a certain culture that we’ve been able to facilitate, no matter who comes to the academy, this is what we expect: high standards of character, skill, and an attitude of winning.” Hamilton has led the program since 2020, and will continue to carry out his vision for the program in the years to come.
