What’s the Difference Between Middle School and High School?

The world of a middle school student is very different from the world of a high school student. Middle school, 6th through 8th grade, is a time of high energy, exploring independence, and navigating changing friendships, while high school, 9th through 12th grade, involves higher level coursework, more intense extracurriculars, and preparation for life post secondary. Each division has unique needs and challenges, and students need a school that steps up to meet those needs.

For 6th graders and their families, entering middle school is a big transition. Instead of going everywhere with their class like an elementary schooler, middle school students learn to follow their individual class schedule, use a locker, and pick out elective classes. With the right support, this responsibility can be an exciting opportunity for an age group that craves independence.

“The energetic ‘middle years’ are such a formative and unique time,” notes Middle School Principal Lynnsey Audette, “students are discovering who they are, building confidence, and beginning to take ownership of their faith and learning.”

By the time students enter high school, they are often ready to look towards the future. Students have the opportunity to begin earning college credits with higher level classes like Dual Enrollment and Advanced Placement courses. A sport that was once a hobby can become an opportunity to sign to play in college. Passions like fine arts, student council, volunteering, chapel, and theater are all shaping students into who they are and who they will be for the rest of their lives.

High School Principal Brent Kreid keeps this forward-thinking in mind when leading Virginia Academy, “My commitment is simple: every student will be known, challenged, and equipped to step confidently into their future.”

Does Virginia Academy have Middle and High School?

Virginia Academy recently announced that it would be dividing it’s 6th-12th grade upper school into a middle school and a high school each with a designated principal. In this video, High School Principal Brent Kreid and Middle School Principal Lynnsey Audette share how this change will make it possible to intentionally reach students and set them up for lifelong success.

As a preschool through 12th grade school, Virginia Academy knows firsthand the differences between students of all ages, and the importance of meeting those students where they’re at. Having recently reached a student population of 1000, the Christian school is now more than ever focused on caring for each student as an individual.

The Head of School Dylan Feathers weighs in, “Let’s be honest, 6th grade and 12th grade are very different worlds. And they deserve leadership that’s fully focused on each. It’s about making sure every student is known, and every family is supported.”
