ASHBURN, VA – The legacy continues! The Virginia Academy girls varsity basketball team fought to earn a 68-57 victory over the Steward School Spartans to win the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) Division II championship. VA Academy has won this title every year since advancing to Division II four years ago. This is their sixth consecutive state championship win, and they ended the season 22-7 overall.
The wins continue with three players making VISAA All-State teams! Junior forward Amaya Ramey earned VISAA Division II State Player of the Year. This follows a strong season for Ramey averaging 18 PPG and 7 RPG.
Senior guard Sydney Moore was selected for First Team All-State. Moore’s season included an average of 12 PPG, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. Sydney is making Virginia Academy history both for breaking the record for career three-pointers, and for having earned a state championship with the VAA varsity girls basketball team every year of her 4 years of high school.
Senior guard Claire Kang earned Second Team All-State honors after averaging 10 PPG, 5 assists, and 2 rebounds.
Several senior players have already signed to play basketball in college including Sydney Moore who will play for Roanoke College, Madison Washington who signed to Marymount University, Sofia Caraus who is heading to University of Albany, and Irieanna Smoot who will play for East Carolina University.
While the senior players are ready to continue their athletic careers at the next level, the younger players are looking forward to the bright future of Virginia Academy basketball. Freshman Combo Guard Sky Slaughter weighed in on her first year playing with the team. “I’m grateful for every lesson, my teammates, and every minute on the court. The work continues.”
