Students in the Spotlight: Theater at Virginia Academy

From their first time stepping on stage as a preschool student to leading the way in 12th grade, Virginia Academy creates opportunities at every level for student performers to shine. In the 2025-2026 school year, students have completed 2 full stage musicals with 2 more on the horizon.

Shrek the Musical – Feb 19 & 20, 2026

Last week, our Virginia Academy performing arts department filled the auditorium with laughter at the middle school performance of Shrek the Musical! The middle school musical is an opportunity for 6th-8th grade students to gain confidence on stage in an encouraging environment. Many of our high school theatre students chose to work behind the scenes helping with costumes, lighting, scene transitions, and building stage elements, including an enormous dragon! This behind-the-scenes support from our older students creates a community where middle schoolers feel seen and supported. With bright costumes, tons of humor, and a wide variety of speaking parts, our students brought Shrek the Musical to life!

Moana Jr. – Mar 12 & 13, 2026

Our next performance is the 5th grade musical Moana Jr! Often considered the “capstone” of the elementary music program at VA Academy, 5th grade students work all year to prepare for their musical. Students learn the foundations of theatre including auditioning, reading a script, blocking, choreography, handling props, and performing live. This year’s 5th grade students are particularly excited to present Moana Jr! Based on the beloved Disney movie, this musical tells the story of a girl who sets sail to save her island. This is a musical full of independence, bravery, and heart, just like these 5th grade students!

Anastasia – Apr 30 & May 1, 2026

This spring our 9th through 12th graders are bringing the enchanting musical Anastasia to the stage! Filled with stunning costumes and dance performances, the high school show is a chance for our most experienced performers to shine. In addition to performing onstage, students also have opportunities to excel behind-the-scenes in technical theater elements such as lighting, set design, make up, and stage managing. Don’t miss this beautiful adventure through the mysterious past!

Tickets will go on sale in April!

Annie – Nov 13 & 14, 2025

At the start of the school year, VAAPA presented the classic musical Annie. This first show of the year featured the entirety of our Virginia Academy performing arts department, which includes students from 6th through 12th grade. With a large cast and a large range of ages, it’s an opportunity for students to collaborate, learn from one another, and build community across all of upper school. Annie was full of sweet moments including a guest appearance from the director’s son as Sandy the dog!
